CHAPTER TEN
On Mission
*****
BRIAN WALKED UP the cargo ramp into the hold. Cody worked extra-long hours, getting the upgrades installed that Brian wanted. He had more water stowage added to the ship. He decreased the dojo's size to allow more weight training machines and free weights.
As soon as Amarantha saw that Brian was in the cargo room, she lifted the Cargo Ramp.
"Ship is secure. All systems nominal. We are ready to go," she said.
"Thank you, Amarantha."
"Ask Traffic control how long before we can take off?" Brian followed the checklist from memory.
"They say there is a one hour hold by Order of the Emir."
"Amarantha, prepare for comm from the Emir." The only person that could interfere with a Special Agent was the Sovereign of Eridani.
"He has made contact. Your earbug should have him."
"To whom do I shoot for this comm, Majesty?" Brian tried to inject humor into the situation. Brian was about to go to a world and do violence in the name of Eridani.
The Emir laughed. "That would be me, Brian."
"Gregor, proceed." The Emir's laughter was infectious. Here was a man who had to deal with all the problems that generated missions for the Special Agents. The Emir's wit was well known to the Special Agents. The Emir seemed to relax with the Special Agents.
The Emir laughed again. "I'm not happy with how Lovat has been about this. Lovat has a tendency to agree until it is their time to give. Then they hide under their sovereignty. I want you to be brutal. Only attack the things of this drug dealer, but make it as horrific as possible. I want the pictures of this to be on their newsflashes for days afterward."
"What's the purpose?"
"Once you are off-planet the Ambassador will say: 'this could have been avoided.'"
"We could have handled this better with cooperation. That is what you are saying, Majesty?" Brian thought it might be the wrong diplomatic thing to do. Orders were orders. Besides, Gregor had access to higher-level information that he did.
"Yes, son."
"We were never married, Gregor. I never got your permission."
"So, May I call you son-in-law?"
"It made no difference to Brian. "When we are alone, in a family setting, but not in a public setting. Part of my armor I wear is anonymity. There is one more thing I can do. I can hang the Windicots."
"You are my son. Please wear your ring, except on the mission. Now I have to go."
"I wonder what that was all about," asked Amarantha.
"If he did not give me two options, I would have brought home a 21-year-old brat. Instead, I brought home a dead body and Victory on Giesling. All it cost him was Amelia, and it nearly cost him me."
"You still have feelings for her?"
"First woman I ever opened my heart to. I will always love her. Julie is working hard to replace her in my heart. It's working, too."
Amarantha took the ship from the planet and into hyper, Brian no longer felt the need to control the ship through every evolution of the ship during its flight.
